CRAZY Days!!
Yes, I know. Please don't rake me over the coals. I haven't posted in almost a month. It has been a crazy month. Harvest is still going on (thank you Mother Nature for the wonderful (awful), warm (cold), dry (wet) weather that has put harvest on hold for the past couple of weeks. We are now getting into the fields again, though it is extremely muddy. Farmers just want to get everything out of the field before it is damaged and unusable!
That being said, we have finally finished harvest on the home farm (phew!) and slowly but surely so is everyone else is also, so things are finally starting to slow down. Those who are involved with farm life definitely know what a gamble it is to farm and what a relief it is to see the fields empty and your husbands, sons, and other family home and resting for a while. It is so stressful for mom's and wives and even worse for the farmers themselves. It is so nice to see them come home early and rest and eat some good healthy food! For those who aren't involved, it is difficult to explain just how stressful it is but I will take a stab at it.
Imagine spending all of your savings at the casino on a chance that you will make even more (but also a chance of losing everything). This is what farmers do. Every. Single. Year. The hardest part is watching everything beat at you, the weather, the prices of inputs and outputs, and having this go on for MONTHS at a time. Every beat of their heart goes into raising food or other products, whether that be through crops (corn, soybeans, wheat, canola, tobacco, cotton, peanuts, barley, oats, etc), animals (beef cattle, dairy cattle, hogs, sheep, goats, chickens, turkey, etc), or even other agriculture, like flowers, vegetables, and fruits.
Now, imagine that stress completely gone because guess what? You won! That is what harvest feels like (until you look at the bills that must be paid). It truly is such a freeing feeling and there is nothing like it. It is what drives people to work themselves to death (figuratively). Farmers are some of the most passionate people you can meet. You have to be in order to do the job.
Back to how harvest is coming. It's almost done! (did I already mention that? I am just so happy about it). And something that I am even happier about...
MY BEST FRIEND ASKED ME TO MARRY HIM! And he totally surprised me doing it! I literally had no idea it was coming. And he did so well! He walked me down the farm lane and when we turned around he got down on one knee and just WOW. I could not believe my eyes. It was seriously perfectly us. Don't get me wrong I have been ever so (im)patiently waiting for this but I totally did not expect to have this happen until a little while after harvest (because that's when he would get paid for his grain). Gosh, I am just so in love with him and the ring and everything.
So that being said, on top of a stressful life of farming and working and trying to keep up with the albeit small household, I now have a wedding to plan! I absolutely cannot wait to dig in. I have already made a wedding binder to keep track of everything. I really suggest you do this just to keep everything in one place. RealSimple and Martha Stewart have some great checklists to include in it also. I used the photography checklist, the 'day-of' checklist, and the budget list.
In addition to this craziness, I have been traveling back and forth from my apartment to my parents, to Adam's parents and to work again. My life definitely keeps me on my toes and honestly, I really wouldn't trade it. Although it would be nice to officially settle down in one spot, I get to do a lot of different things that probably wouldn't happen if it weren't for my insane life.
The puppy definitely keeps me on my toes also! She is getting the stubborn stages where she doesn't listen to a thing I tell her unless she is getting a treat. I hope she grows out of this. I have been crate training her in the past, but recently have started letting her out during the day just so she can get more exercise since we can't go to the dog park anymore (due to the weather). With that, I am realizing that I needed to puppy proof a little better. She has chewed up a favorite purse and a favorite pair of shoes so far and hopefully nothing else. We will see when I get home today if she has gotten anything else out.
So there, my life is a crazy mess overrun by traveling and engagements and puppies and farming. It certainly doesn't feel like I am only 22 years old. I hope everyone else is enjoying there lives also. I always tell myself if I don't like it, it's not forever. I also always tell myself that I don't have to do anything I don't like and to always make sure that I am overall enjoying what I am doing. You will always have your good and bad days, just make sure that you don't hate the good days too!
Much Love,
Taylor
